Ketogenic diet and safety on Ketogenic diet

Ketogenic diet  and safety on Ketogenic diet

Ketogenic diets are very effective at achieving two common aims of diabetes control, lowering blood glucose levels and reducing weight

A ketogenic diet is a very low-carb diet, considered to be when you eat a level of carbohydrate of around 30g of carbohydrates per day or below.

This encourages the body to get its energy from burning body fat which produces an energy source known as ketones.

The diet helps to lower the body’s demand for insulin which has benefits for people with type 1 and type 2 diabetes

Note that it is important that you speak to your doctor if you are considering following the diet as precautions may need to be taken before starting.

On a ketogenic diet, blood glucose levels are kept at a low but healthy level which encourages the body to break down fat into a fuel source known as ketones

The process of breaking down or ‘burning’ body fat is known as ketosis

People on insulin will typically require smaller doses of insulin which leads to less risk of large dosing errors.

The diet helps burn body fat and therefore has particular advantages for those looking to lose weight, including people with prediabetes or those otherwise at risk of type 2 diabetes.

Based on the understanding that carbohydrate is the macronutrient that raises blood glucose the most, the primary goal of a ketogenic diet is to keep consumption lower than that of a traditional low carbohydrate diet with moderate protein and a very high fat content.

This will determine the nutrient density of the ketogenic diet as well as how to follow it, as different foods will have different effects on insulin and blood sugar levels.

Which foods to eat on a ketogenic diet

There are a number of different types of ketogenic diet with variations in the level of carbohydrates and protein allowed in the diet and/or the amount of time someone is looking to spend in ketosis.

Note that some of the types of ketogenic have been designed specifically for people that are athletes or are otherwise working out very hard and often.

Ketone bodies produced from burning fat for fuel have been shown to have potent weight loss effects, help lower blood glucose levels and reduce people’s reliance on diabetes medication.

The diet has also shown evidence of having benefits on:

  • Reducing high blood pressure
  • Reducing triglyceride levels
  • Raising HDL cholesterol levels (a good sign of heart health)
  • Improving mental performance
  • Read more about the benefits of ketogenic diets

In addition to that, there has been a lot of interest in therapeutic ketosis for other long-term conditions, such as cancer, epilepsy, Alzheimer’s disease or dementia.

How can a keto diet help other conditions

Significant weight loss and blood glucose control benefits can be derived from even a mild state of ketosis. There are a few methods you can use to measure the levels of ketones in your blood, urine or breath – each having their pros and cons.

With every change in the diet comes an adaptation period. With a ketogenic diet, the adaption is significant as the body has to switch its fuel source from glucose to fat. When this happens, it is not uncommon to experience a collection of side effects called ‘keto-flu’. This usually goes away within about four weeks.

Ketogenic diet side effects

Diabetic ketoacidosis (DKA) is when someone with type 1 diabetes, or very late-stage, insulin-dependent, type 2 diabetes, can’t produce any insulin and make very high amounts of ketones without stopping to prevent an effective state of starvatio, which can lead to that person becoming critically ill.

Keto-adaption is a state, achieved through significant reduction of carbohydrate where the body changes from relying on glucose as its main source of energy to relying on ketones from fat burning.

Ketosis should only be a danger to someone on insulin if they have missed a dose of insulin or they are rationing their food intake, and therefore their insulin doses, too severely.

This is another good reason to ensure you have spoken with your doctor before starting the diet.

There is generally a lack of long-term studies into the safety and effectiveness of ketogenic diets and, this is why a doctor’s opinion is needed before starting the diet.

There are a few groups of people for whom a ketogenic diet may not be suitable, or at the very least, warrants close supervision.

These include pregnant women, children, people at risk of hypoglycemia, people with a very low BMI, and those with conditions that a ketogenic diet may exacerbate.

Benefits of Amla (Indian Gooseberry) in weight Loss

Amla / Indian Gooseberry

Most of us eat amla as pickle, juices and Chyawanprash.
Now let’s see what else we can do with it to help us lose weight

Amla, aka Indian Gooseberry is one fruit that packs many health benefits into a really small package.  It is rich in vitamin C & contains anti-oxidants, fibre and minerals like calcium and phosphorus.

Following are the 7 health benefits of Amla (Indian Gooseberry/Emblica officinalis):

  • Build immunity
  • Increase metabolism
  • Lose weight
  • Absorb nutrients like iron better
  • Eliminate toxins
  • Improve digestion
  • Better bowel movements

A lesser known fact is that amla is an effective weight loss aid.   Its high fibre content helps flush out waste from the body.  Protein present in amla also helps control cravings.  A glass of amla juice before a meal fills you up and makes you eat less.  Amla has tannic and other acids which help relieve indigestion and constipation.

A healthy digestive system means more energy from food.  Including amla in the diet through food and juices will help anyone lose weight naturally and easily.  Good side effects would be glowing skin, glossy hair and few health problems.

How to include amla in your everyday diet?

Drinking amla juice is the easiest way to benefit from this super food.  Amla is available in plenty from December through April.  You could even mix it with aloe vera juice.  Add a couple of teaspoons of amla juice to fresh fruit juices for flavour.

Top 5 Home Remedies To Get Rid Of Tooth Decay

Top 5 Home Remedies To Get Rid of Tooth Decay

Health Tips Thai Medicals

Tooth decay is the destruction of your tooth enamel, the hard, outer layer of your teeth. It can be a problem for children, teens and adults. Plaque, a sticky film of bacteria, constantly forms on your teeth. When you eat or drink foods containing sugars, the bacteria in plaque produce acids that attack tooth enamel. The stickiness of the plaque keeps these acids in contact with your teeth and over time the enamel can break down. This is when cavities can form.

Cavities are more common among children, but changes that occur with aging make cavities an adult problem, too. Recession of the gums away from the teeth, combined with an increased incidence of gum disease, can expose tooth roots to plaque. Tooth roots are covered with cementum, a softer tissue than enamel. They are susceptible to decay and are more sensitive to touch and to hot and cold. It’s common for people over age 50 to have tooth-root decay.

Decay around the edges, or a margin, of fillings is also common for older adults. Because many older adults lacked benefits of fluoride and modern preventive dental care when they were growing up, they often have a number of dental fillings. Over the years, these fillings may weaken and tend to fracture and leak around the edges. Bacteria accumulate in these tiny crevices causing acid to build up which leads to decay.

What do you do when a sharp pain in your tooth suddenly wakes you up at 3 am in the morning? When you don’t have a dentist to help you out and the piercing pain isn’t letting you sleep, our home remedies for tooth decay will definitely help you!

If there have been no major problems with your oral health in the whole year, then maybe increasing your knowledge about tooth decay causes should help you avoid it in future. You’ve always found brushing at night totally over rated because somehow you’ve gotten lucky through genetics. Obviously that won’t last for long, because brushing 2-3 times a day is very essential in order to avoid decay. Another reason could be a cavity in the tooth which again is due to lack of oral hygiene. You also need to cut down on sugary stuff, just in case you’ve been hogging on it without realising how much harm it’s causing your teeth.

Some folks also have the habit of grinding their teeth when they’re asleep. Yes, it does sound pretty weird, but it is actually a sign that the person may be under too much stress. Grinding your teeth might result in chipped enamel and weak gums. So if someone informed you about the grinding, just buy a mouth guard and sleep with it to avoid harming your teeth.

We have listed a few tooth decay home remedies which will help you cure it naturally.

5 Home Remedies for Tooth Decay

1. Cloves:

The first remedy to cure tooth decay naturally is a very handy ingredient you’ll find in your kitchen known as cloves. They not only help you numb the pain of a tooth ache, but their anti-bacterial properties helps you get rid of the decay as well.

3 drops of clove oil,
½ a tsp. of honey
2-3 drops of sesame oil.

How To Use:

Dab the mixture in cotton and press to the affected area for a few minutes and repeatedly. It should heal within a few days.

2. Sesame:

Another of our special tooth decay remedies is popularly known as ‘oil pulling’

Rinsing your teeth with sesame oil for 20 minutes is sure to help you cure that agonising tooth decay

Make sure you don’t ingest the oil. It is also supposed to help you whiten your teeth and clean them naturally
Brush your teeth with Oral B Pro-Health Toothbrush after this to avoid having that weird oil flavour in your mouth

3. Salt Water Rinse:

Amongst other natural remedies for tooth decay is a plain and simple salt water rinse.

It helps fight the bacteria present in your mouth and also aids in decreasing sensitivity in your teeth

All you have to do is warm some water and put 1 tsp. of salt in it,

Rinse your mouth with it for 10 minutes, thrice a day and your pain plus decay should subside soon. Ain’t nobody got time for pain!

4. Garlic & Salt:

Steps To Use:

Crush a clove of garlic and mix it in a pinch of salt.
Now apply this to your affected tooth and in no time the pain will fade away.

Use it regularly and see how your corrupted tooth heals in no time.

5.  Mustard oil and turmeric :

Mustard oil and turmeric have been used in Indian households since generations to cure every ailment there is. It is a very effective medicine for tooth decay as well.

How To Use:

Mix ½ tsp. of turmeric powder in 1 tsp. of mustard oil and mix well, dab with a cotton and apply to your tooth for some time.

The pain will slowly subside and you’ll be able to enjoy your favourite ice-cream tomorrow, that too without agony!

19 Simple Home Remedies and Lifestyle Tips for Chest Pain

19 Simple Home Remedies and Lifestyle Tips for Chest Pain

Chest pain presents itself in many forms, ranging from dull aches to a sharp stabbing sensation. It can feel like crushing or burning, and in other cases, the pain travels up into the neck, jaw, and then radiates to the back or down one or both arms. Various problems can cause chest pain, but the most serious and life-threatening causes involve the lungs and heart. Since chest pain is often an indicator of a serious problem, medical help should be sought immediately.

Home Remedies for Chest Pain

One of the most common complaints people make when visiting the emergency department is chest pain. Chest pain caused by reduced blood flow to the heart is known as angina. Angina presents with a feeling of tightness, squeezing, heaviness, burning, and pressure behind the breastbone. Other symptoms include pain in the upper central abdomen, back, neck, jaw, or shoulders; nausea; fatigue; breathlessness; sweating; and dizziness.

To treat angina, medication prescribed by a doctor is the primary solution, however, there are home remedies for chest pain and angina you can try. The following may help to reduce the blockage in the arteries and reduce the frequency of or relieve the chest pain completely.

Cayenne Pepper

Provides relief from chest pain due to its high concentration of capsaicin, an anti-inflammatory agent. It also works as a blood regulator to restore circulation of blood to the heart. To use it as a health remedy, add one teaspoon of cayenne pepper powder to a glass of milk or fruit juice. Drink it in one go to alleviate the pain. You can also take it as a supplement after consulting your health practitioner.

A good remedy for chest pain, basil contains magnesium, which promotes blood flow by helping the heart and blood vessels relax. It also contains the antioxidant vitamin A, which prevents cholesterol buildup in the blood vessel walls. When you experience chest pain, chew 10 fresh basil leaves or drink a cup of basil tea to get relief. To prevent chest pain and improve your heart’s health, take a teaspoon of fresh basil juice with one teaspoon of honey and consume it daily on an empty stomach.

Alfalfa is effective in reducing chest pain as it reduces cholesterol levels and plaque buildup, ensuring smoother blood flow to the heart. Alfalfa also contains adequate amounts of chlorophyll, which softens arteries and reduces the frequency of chest pain. To consume it, make a warm alfalfa tea by adding one teaspoon of dried leaves to a cup of hot water. Steep for five minutes, strain, and enjoy. You can also take supplements daily to reduce the frequency of chest pain.

This plant product can promote cardiovascular health and prevent chest pain like angina. It also has antioxidant and cardio-protective properties, which reduce cholesterol and promote blood flow to the heart. To consume, add one teaspoon of fenugreek seeds to one and a half cups of water and boil for five minutes. Strain, add two teaspoons of honey, and drink. As a preventative measure, eat soaked fenugreek seeds daily.

Rich in polyunsaturated fatty acids, almonds can reduce blood cholesterol levels and promote heart health. It is also rich in plant sterols, fiber, and magnesium. To reduce pain, mix equal amounts of almond oil and rose oil. Rub it gently over your chest and soon the pain will subside. To reduce the risk of chest pain and other heart diseases, eat a handful of roasted almonds daily.

Drink a Hot Drink

A common cause of chest pain is gas, and drinking a warm or hot drink will help activate your digestive system to ease gas and bloating. Hot hibiscus tea supports digestion and heart health, and research has shown it helps lower blood pressure while reducing cholesterol and triglycerides.

Apply a Cold Pack

Another common cause of heart pain is chest muscle strain from weightlifting, a fall, or even carrying a child. Inflammation of the chest wall (costochondritis) is often the cause of severe chest pain. Applying a cold pack several times daily to the affected area can reduce inflammation and ease pain.

This type of vinegar aids digestion, preventing gas production in the abdomen, which in turn reduces chest pain. Simply consume two teaspoons of ACV in the event of chest pain.

Instead of consuming meat and dairy regularly, choose a vegetarian diet. Less fat and less cholesterol can reduce many of the minor symptoms of angina pain. Eating vegetables, especially green ones, control angina and helps maintain overall health.

Citrus Fruits

To fight angina daily, you can consume citrus fruits like lemon, pineapples, oranges, and grapes. Vitamin C also helps manage cholesterol levels.

Water flushes out excess sodium that causes hypertension and high blood pressure. These symptoms can lead to angina pain and coronary heart disease. You should drink about eight ounces of water every two hours, and two liters of water is the daily recommendation for the average adult. Not getting enough water can lead to dehydration, causing headaches, irritability, dizziness, irregular heartbeat, and shortness of breath.

Lifestyle Changes to Alleviate Chest Pain

There are lifestyle changes you can make to alleviate chest pain aside from diet modifications. Meditation is one such change. Meditation increases blood and oxygen flow throughout your entire body and even slows the heart rate. It also relaxes you, reduces anxiety and stress, and lowers your risk of chest pain. To meditate, sit comfortably and relax your body with your back straight. Take a deep breath through your nose, hold it for a few seconds, then breathe out slowly through your mouth. Focus your mind on anything that makes you happy and feel calm. Repeat this breathing pattern until the pain is gone. Yoga and stretching daily can also prevent chest pain. Here are some more lifestyle changes you can make to improve your health and alleviate chest pain:

  • Get enough sleep
  • Avoid sitting for long periods
  • Avoid stress
  • Avoid strenuous activities that bring on angina
  • Maintain a healthy weight
  • Avoid extremely cold or hot environments
  • Get moderate exercise
  • Monitor your blood pressure
  • Quit smoking and do not use tobacco products
  • Limit alcohol intake
The most important part of eliminating and preventing chest pain is to start healthy life habits now. Maintaining a healthy diet, incorporating moderate exercise, and taking time to get enough rest and relaxation are essential to good health. Incorporating any of the above home remedies and lifestyle changes can help you keep angina pain at bay so you can enjoy a happy, productive life. If you do have angina or chest pain, it is important you understand the symptoms and do what it takes to limit them as best as you can. This will require the assistance of your doctor and lifestyle changes on your part.

Health Tips for Students to Beat Exam Stress and Perform well.

Health Tips for Students to Beat Exam Stress and Perform well.

Simple measures recommended by experts for children getting ready for exam season.

How to Beat Exam Stress - Image Courtesy (Shutterstock)

It’s that time of the year when both students and parents feel “exam pressure”. Students are under pressure to perform their best, but doing so requires a balanced approach to health, in addition to consistent studying. This balanced approach helps students boost their memory and remember what they have studied.

Dr Hariprasad, an Ayurveda expert at The Himalaya Drug Company, recommends the following tips to maintain a healthy lifestyle during the upcoming exams:

Exercise regularly: Physical activity is an effective tool to improve academic performance. Studies conducted at the University of British Columbia have shown that regular aerobic exercise boosts the size of the part of the brain involved in verbal memory and learning. Exercise also helps in improving memory and thinking the ability for students by increasing oxygen flow to the brain. It’s easy to forget to exercise your body in the midst of all the mental exertion, but this is important as physical exercise boosts brain function in a variety of ways.

Maintain a healthy diet: Eating healthy is a good practice to maintain at all times, but it assumes greater significance in the exam season. A diet rich in vegetables, fruits, whole grains, dairy, fish and poultry is particularly good to adopt at this time. It will enable students to fulfill all their nutritional needs so their bodies can perform at an optimum level. They require adequate nourishment to fuel brain activity and aid in memory retention. Eating healthy also helps prevent illnesses.

Appropriate herbs in daily diet: According to Ayurvedic texts and modern research, Brahmi helps promote memory, intelligence and enhances alertness. It is a potent mental tonic that calms the mind, provides clarity in thinking and boosts memory retention. Taking this herb regularly improves certain brain chemicals that will improve mental agility, helping students to achieve their goals.

Get adequate sleep: While preparing for exams, one of the body’s most important needs is sometimes foregone — sleep. Students preparing for exams should get at least 6-8 hours of sleep every night to maintain good mental and physical health. Studies conducted by Harvard University have shown that there is a strong relationship between sleep and memory: Students who get adequate sleep usually get better grades than those who do not. Sleep solidifies and boosts short-term memory into long-term memory. Adequate sleep helps students be more receptive to information and, consequently, enables better performance in exams.

Following these simple tips in addition to regular and effective studying will help students retain information more efficiently and provide the much-needed boost for their upcoming examinations.
